Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid
to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer, and Encarna Sanchez, hairdresser. When she was a
young girl she was already an avid performer who would recreate commercials on
TV for her parents' amusement. However, she chose to focus her energies on
dancing. She continued to train alongside a group of highly respected dancers
after spending 9 years studying classical ballet at Spain's National
Conservatory. She realized her passion at the age of 15 after she defeated over
300 contestants in an audition for an agency for talent. The resultant contract
secured her numerous roles on Spanish television shows as well as music videos,
which in turn led to a career on the big screen. Cruz made her film debut with
The Greek Labyrinth (1993). (The Greek Labyrinth). After that she appeared in a
brief scene in Framed (1992) by Timothy Dalton. Her third film, Belle Epoque
(1992) was an Oscar-winning film in which she was one of the four sisters
seeking to win the love of an attractive deserter army soldier. It also took
home several Goyas in Spain which is the Spanish equivalent to the Academy
Awards. Cruz continued to add films to her portfolio, growing by three to four
per year. Soon Cruz was the leading lady in Spanish cinema. Live Flesh (1997)
(Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director
Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the
same year she was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film
Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none
for Cruz). In 1998, her luck changed when she was awarded the award for Best
Actress Goya for her role in the film industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos
(1998). After a few more chances to make a film in English Cruz's first
international breakthrough was in Almodovar's All About My Mother (1999) in
which she played a unchaste, but very well-meaning nun. Cruz found herself in
high demand across both sides of the Atlantic due to her film winning numerous
awards and accolades. The next major film she worked on was Woman on Top (2000)
